There are plans to tear down a Hudson’s Bay store located in southern Ontario.

It’s been more than a year since the Hudson’s Bay Company closed all 96 of its stores across Canada back in May 2025. Since then, most of these locations have stayed empty.

Now, the future of one of those former stores has been revealed.

Primaris, a Canadian firm that owns and manages shopping centres throughout the country, announced it has acquired a former Bay store in Windsor.

On June 5, 2026, Primaris finalized a $4.5 million deal to buy the vacant Hudson’s Bay Company store at Devonshire Mall in Windsor, according to an update on its leasing and redevelopment efforts. The standalone store was owned separately.

“Primaris plans to demolish this space and redesign a new mall entrance, and accordingly does not include this space in its analysis of former HBC space,” the company stated.

The old Hudson’s Bay Company store originally opened as a Simpson’s department store at Devonshire Mall back in September 1974, based on an from that time.

Hudson’s Bay Company took over Simpsons in 1978 but continued operating some stores under the Simpsons brand for many years, as reported by Retail Insider.

The location at Devonshire Mall transitioned to The Bay on August 1, 1986, when Hudson’s Bay Company started consolidating its department store operations nationwide, according to Retail Insider. The store shut down on June 1, 2025.

No information is available yet regarding when the vacant store will be demolished.

This news comes as plans advance for other former Bay locations.

In June, Georgian Mall in Barrie announced it had secured three tenants for the old Hudson’s Bay unit within the mall.

Additionally, Walmart Canada revealed intentions to move into the former Hudson’s Bay site at Place d’Orléans in Ottawa.
