Wellington OPP have confirmed that five people lost their lives in a two-vehicle crash in Mapleton Township on Friday night.
Emergency services responded to the scene at the intersection of Wellington Road 12 and 4th Line, close to Conestogo Lake Conservation Area, shortly after 7:30 p. m.
Police report that a van carrying 10 passengers collided with an SUV occupied by one person at the intersection.
The tragic incident resulted in the deaths of five children aged four to twelve. Authorities say four adults, one infant, and the driver of the SUV sustained serious injuries.
Three individuals were airlifted to trauma centers due to their critical injuries, while several others were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement team is currently on site and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
Consequently, the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12 remained closed until about 4 p. m. on Saturday.
