Five teenagers are now facing multiple charges, and Ontario’s police watchdog has stepped in after two of them were seriously injured while reportedly trying to escape a traffic stop in Durham Region.

According to Durham police, they recovered two firearms and illegal magazines from the vehicle that the youths were traveling in after it crashed in Whitby on Monday night.

In a news release on Wednesday, police stated that they began a traffic stop on a suspicious vehicle near Winchester Road W. and Thornton Road N. around 10:30 p. m. The vehicle sped away but was found shortly after in a ditch following a collision with another car.

The individuals involved now face several charges, including possession of a restricted or prohibited firearm, driving without a license, evading law enforcement, and possession of prohibited ammunition.

The Special Investigations Unit announced on Tuesday that it is looking into the incident since two youths suffered serious injuries during the attempted police stop. They reported that the youths were traveling in a BMW while identifying the other vehicle as a Nissan Rogue SUV.

Police clarified that they did not pursue the vehicle once it fled from the stop.

SIU spokesperson Kristy Denette mentioned that both a 17-year-old and a 13-year-old were taken to Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. One has since been discharged, she added.

The 16-year-old driver ran away on foot with minor injuries but was caught later, Denette said. Two other passengers were not seriously hurt, according to SIU reports.

The occupants of the SUV also didn’t sustain serious injuries, Denette noted.

If anyone has information regarding this incident, they are encouraged to reach out to the SIU at 1-800-787-8529.
