Whitby Man Convicted of Killing Ex-Wife Shares Confession Online

A man from Whitby, Ontario, was found guilty of murdering his 34-year-old wife, who had ended their relationship. After the incident, he posted a confession on social media saying, “Am sorry for killing her, I love her and I can’t imagine her with a next man.”

Latonya Anderson was only four days away from turning 35 when Troy Moulton strangled her to death at their home on Kressman Court in Whitby on November 4, 2023. At the time, Anderson lived there with her 12-year-old son, her mother, and her brother.

Moulton was convicted of second-degree murder in March following a trial without a jury.

The penalty for second-degree murder is life imprisonment. The judge’s only task now is to determine a period of parole ineligibility between 10 and 25 years.

Assistant Crown attorney Tammy D’Eri told Superior Court Justice Lisa Wannamaker that the parole ineligibility should be set at 20 years due to aggravating factors in this case. This included that Anderson’s son witnessed the fight between his mother and Moulton.

After killing Anderson, Moulton left the house after briefly talking to the boy, who later discovered his mother’s lifeless body.

Moulton went to a bank after leaving home, completed a wire transfer to Jamaica, wrote about Anderson on social media, then called Durham Regional Police to confess.

Once he arrived at 17 Division police station, he was taken to 18 Division where he gave an 80-minute statement explaining what transpired that night.

Moulton claimed during the trial that he never intended to kill Anderson; rather it was an accident. He said he didn’t realize his arm was around her neck while holding her close.

He mentioned she tried to escape but he held onto her so they could talk. It wasn’t until later that he realized she wasn’t moving anymore.

However, Judge Wannamaker stated in her ruling that Moulton meant to kill Anderson or intended to inflict bodily harm while being reckless about whether death would result.

“He was upset with Ms. Anderson. He felt extremely unhappy because he believed she was starting a new relationship right before him,” wrote Wannamaker.

“He placed significant importance on her upcoming birthday just days away. He felt particularly distraught thinking she’d celebrate it with another man.”

The judge added: “He wanted her to change her mind and thought if she had comforted him instead of rejecting him, he’d not be sitting at a police station right now-meaning Ms. Anderson would still be alive. It became too much for Mr. Moulton to handle (sic), leading him to put his hands around her throat.”

“He did this intentionally and maliciously by squeezing for five minutes until she stopped breathing and died.”

D’Eri noted it wasn’t mere coincidence that Moulton killed his wife just four days before her birthday.

“This crime stemmed from jealousy and possessiveness since she had ended things with him. He couldn’t stand the thought of losing her as she prepared for another birthday without him.”

D’Eri referenced Moulton’s Facebook post made shortly after the murder which read: “She cheating on me and spitting it in my face I was going crazy like literally mad… love you Latonya but I couldn’t make you walk out of my life.”

Soon after posting on Facebook, Moulton turned himself into police and admitted what happened while claiming that Anderson had been unfaithful.

D’Eri pointed out that later on during therapy sessions with a psychologist, Moulton stated infidelity wasn’t why he killed his wife-that initial claim given during police questioning wasn’t true either.

Moulton testified at trial insisting jealousy wasn’t behind his actions nor did he believe Anderson had moved on with someone else.
