A toddler is currently in stable condition after a coyote bite incident in Whitby on Monday, according to Durham police.
Officers responded to a public field near the wooded area at Coronation Road and Rossland Road on June 22, where the young boy was attacked while with his parents. The child was initially taken to a local hospital and later moved to a facility in Toronto for further care.
To respect the family’s privacy, authorities aren’t sharing any more details about the victim other than confirming he is a toddler.
Durham police have informed Animal Services and Public Health, both of which are now involved in reviewing the situation and keeping an eye on wildlife activity in the area.
The incident occurred before Durham police issued a public safety warning urging residents to stay alert following several coyote-related events. The advisory released on Tuesday cautioned that coyotes tend to be most active at dawn and dusk and may act aggressively if they feel threatened or cornered.
This attack adds to a series of concerning incidents involving coyotes and young children across the GTA. Last month in Markham, another child was scratched by a coyote, which led to a police warning, while a 16-year-old girl in Markham was bitten while walking close to her home, prompting joint action from police and animal services.
