The Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is on the lookout for a male suspect following a violent sexual assault that occurred late Monday night along a well-known waterfront trail in Whitby.

Officers responded to Iroquois Beach Park, located near Gordon Street and the Waterfront Trail, shortly after 10:15 p. m. after receiving reports of an attack on a woman as she was leaving the park.

According to investigators, the victim was walking along the sandy path leading northwest toward Gordon Street when an unknown man confronted her. Police report that he pulled her off the path into a wooded area, made threats, and sexually assaulted her.

The woman managed to break free and ran towards the street, where she flagged down a passing driver who called 911. Paramedics took her to a local hospital. Authorities say she sustained injuries but have not disclosed further information.

The suspect fled before police arrived. Officers conducted an extensive search of the area using DRPS K9 and drone units but were unable to find him.

He is described as a Black male with shoulder-length cornrows, wearing all-black clothing.

Authorities are urging anyone who was in the vicinity Monday night to come forward, especially those who might have cellphone video, dashcam footage, or home surveillance that could help identify the suspect.

As they continue their investigation, police announced they will be increasing patrols around Iroquois Beach Park and the Waterfront Trail.
