Spirit Halloween is making a big splash in Whitby this year, as the seasonal store prepares to open its doors in the old Toys “R” Us location on Thickson Road next month.
This site is labeled by Spirit Halloween as “not your average costume shop,” since most of their stores are found in smaller spaces compared to the large, 200,000-sq. ft former Toys “R” Us building, which is currently clearing out its remaining stock.
“It’s a fully immersive Halloween destination packed with spooky surprises around every corner,” The Sprit Halloween website declared, “with everything you need to celebrate the season in style.”
The shop will carry the usual range of officially licensed costumes for men, women, kids, and even pets but at a much larger scale. There will also be an extensive selection of Halloween decorations, displays, and animatronics for those looking to set up a haunted house, creepy yard display or fun party setup.
Earlier this year, Toys “R” Us Canada sought creditor protection due to around $160 million in unpaid debts.
This matter went before Ontario’s Superior Court. The company’s restructuring resulted in three successful bids that saw ownership of the Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us brands along with certain store leases and other assets go to various buyers.
The closure of the Whitby location is happening this month after more than 40 years since it first opened on Thickson Road right in town’s retail shopping district.
Signs advertising ‘everything must go’ alongside discounts ranging from 25 percent to 90 percent off are plastered across both the front window and inside the store. Shoppers will find mostly empty shelves while hunting for deals on toys, stuffed animals, DVDs and more.
Sprit Halloween has shared details about their locations for this spooky season. They already have stores open on Pickering Parkway in Pickering and one on West Drive (in what used to be Value Village) in Brampton. Additionally, new stores are set to launch later this month at Square One in Mississauga (former Chapters store) and Oshawa (previously an Ardene location on Laval Drive).
