A man from Newfoundland is facing charges after an incident was caught on video, which has since gone viral. The footage shows a passenger grabbing the steering wheel of a taxi cab driver in what appears to be an attempt to cause an accident in Whitby.
The dashcam footage from the cab was shared on X by 6ix Buzz TV on Thursday.
In the video, the accused, who was sitting in the front seat, suddenly grabs the steering wheel without warning and forces a collision into a tractor-trailer. There were also passengers in the back seat at that time, but their connection to the man is unclear.
The driver’s vehicle was traveling over 115 km/h when it crashed into the side of the truck. After coming to a stop, the accused quickly unbuckles his seatbelt and gets out of the car. Shortly thereafter, the tractor-trailer is seen pulling over on the side of the road.
No physical injuries have been reported.
“That vehicle could have gotten tangled up under the trailer, it could have rolled or flipped or gotten diverted into other traffic,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt tells City News.
According to OPP, this incident occurred at 5 p. m. on Wednesday on Hwy. 412 near Taunton Road in Whitby.
A 45-year-old man from Newfoundland was taken into custody and now faces several charges.
“He is now facing charges of mischief, endangering life, mischief causing damage to property and dangerous driving even though he was the passenger of the vehicle,” explained Schmidt.
Authorities are looking into why he tried to force a collision while in a taxi cab.
Whitby OPP is continuing with their investigation.
