A 63-year-old man has been charged with trying to kidnap three boys under the age of 14 from a men’s restroom at a park along Whitby’s waterfront on Wednesday.

According to Durham Regional Police, officers were called to Heydenshore Kiwanis Park – located on Water St. near the south end of Brock St. – after reports of “a suspicious interaction” involving a man and the boys in a public washroom.

The boys allegedly encountered a man who encouraged them to come to his vehicle, said Const. Emily Mitchell in a statement released Saturday.

She mentioned that the children “reported the incident to their parents” who subsequently contacted the police.

The suspect left in his vehicle before law enforcement arrived at the park; however, Mitchell noted that officers found him nearby and took him into custody.

Bernard Deery, from Whitby, is facing three counts of attempting to abduct minors under fourteen years old and resisting or obstructing a peace officer.

He was held for a bail hearing.

Investigators have shared a photo of the accused as they are worried there may be other victims.

Police are asking anyone who had an encounter with this individual to step forward.

Anyone with information related to this case can call police at 1 – 888 – 579 – 1520 , ext. 1877 , or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1 – 800 – 222 – TIPS (8477).
