Durham College (DC), Trees for Life, and the Alzheimer Society of Ontario are teaming up for a Memory Forest project at DC’s Whitby campus, with backing from the Barrett Family Foundation.
A ceremony took place on September 16 to kick off the project by planting a single tree. In the months ahead, a section of the Whitby campus will be transformed into an accessible green space designed for individuals living with dementia, their caregivers, and other community members.
The plans for this area include planting native trees, creating accessible pathways, implementing high-contrast wayfinding features, adding tactile elements, sensory plantings, and gathering spots. Trees for Life is sharing its expertise in native tree planting and urban greening as the site develops, while the Alzheimer Society of Ontario is providing guidance on how to ensure dementia inclusion.
The Memory Forest will also engage DC students in caring for and developing this area. DC will oversee designing nature-focused programs, allowing students to take part in stewardship activities and gain practical experience.
“The Memory Forest is a great example of how partnerships can create opportunities for DC and the broader community,” said Dr. Elaine Popp, President of Durham College. “We’re pleased to be working with Trees for Life and the Alzheimer Society of Ontario on this project and to provide a space that is welcoming to people living with dementia and their caregivers.”
Work on developing the Memory Forest is expected to continue until 2027 as DC collaborates with its community partners to establish this new space at the Whitby campus.
