A proposal to improve parking facilities around Whitby Abbey has been presented to the mayor of North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Council is aiming to obtain £250,000 from the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority (YNYCA) to enhance the overflow car park at Whitby Abbey Headland.

This initiative includes installing cellular paving – interlocking porous slabs – allowing the car park to be accessible during rainy weather that has rendered the current surface unusable due to muddy conditions.

Additionally, North Yorkshire Council mentioned its long-term goal is to establish a second permanent park and ride service for Whitby.

According to the authority’s parking policy, “parking will be managed so as to support the vitality and attractiveness of town centres, recognising parking arrangements are key to trade”.

Regeneration and localities officers have examined evidence and conducted community consultations in Whitby, a report from the council stated.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service noted that this project would receive support from YNYCA’s High Street Fund.
