The Ontario Government has revealed plans to invest over $1.1 million into the Waterloo Region. According to officials, this funding aims to safeguard workers in the area from tariffs. Additionally, the investment seeks to lessen dependence on U. S. markets.

This funding, part of the Trade-Impacted Communities Program, will support two local projects. In a news release, the government mentioned that this investment is expected to protect 1,230 jobs in Waterloo Region.

Details of the Investments

The Regional Municipality of Waterloo is contributing more than $1.3 million towards its Aviation, Aerospace and Defence Strategic Growth Initiative. Ontario is providing $838,700 as part of this funding effort. The primary goal of this investment focuses on manufacturing exports that are crucial to Canada’s aerospace supply chain. Consequently, the government anticipates that this initiative will create 50 new jobs while sustaining 1,000 current positions.

Premier Doug Ford stated in a press release that this investment reflects Ontario’s commitment to supporting the Waterloo region:

“Today’s investment is part of our plan to double down on Waterloo Region’s world-class companies in manufacturing, defence, health care and more, so we can meet whatever challenges that come our way.”

An additional investment was also announced by the City of Waterloo which includes $600,000 for Waterloo Health Innovation Economic Development. To further support this initiative, Ontario pledged an extra $270,000 aimed at developing an export-ready Health Tech Sector. The government believes this accelerator program will generate 120 new job opportunities and bolster 60 existing roles.

Kitchener and Conestoga MPP Mike Harris emphasized how vital these investments are for the future of the Waterloo Region:

“Waterloo Region is home to strong and growing health technology and aerospace sectors. By investing in these key industries, we’re helping local companies reach new international markets, attract new investment to our region and reduce our reliance on U. S. trade. These investments will help build the kind of resilience that will keep Waterloo Region’s economy strong for years to come while helping drive Ontario forward as we build one of the strongest, most competitive and self-reliant economies in the G7.”
