At 3 p. m. on Tuesday, temperatures in the Waterloo region hit 26.8 C, surpassing the previous record of 26.5 C for the warmest October 13 set back in 2008.

By 4 p. m., a temperature of 26.9 C was recorded at the Region of Waterloo International Airport.

The Eric D. Soulis Weather Station at the University of Waterloo noted that it reached 27.7 C at that same hour.

With humidity factored in, it felt more like the low to mid-30s Celsius.

“A very warm, unseasonably warm and record-breaking warm in southern Ontario today,” Peter Kimbell, a warning preparedness meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, told Tuesday afternoon.

Kimbell was in Ottawa where temperatures were around 6 C and people there were “shivering in winter-like conditions.”

Record-breaking heat hits Waterloo region

Waterloo region experienced record-breaking high temperatures on Tuesday. The recorded temperature in Waterloo region reached 26.8 C, beating the previous record of 26.5 C for the warmest Oct. 13 set in 2008. But the warm spell won’t last long as CBC K-W’s Aastha Shetty looked into what else is coming up this week.

He mentioned that weather will fluctuate over the next few days.

On Wednesday, expect a high of only 16 C which is “much more seasonal,” but cooler temperatures will follow with highs dropping to just 12 C on Thursday and Friday before hitting freezing Friday night.

There’s also a chance for rain later on Wednesday and again on Friday.

People were out enjoying sunshine at Victoria Park in Kitchener on Tuesday afternoon. Many wore T-shirts while some sported shorts and tank tops as they jogged around.

Kimbell advised that they might want to start pulling out their warmer clothes soon.

“I mean, it is mid-October. I think we’re into sweater territory right now,” he said, noting that normal highs for this time of year are around 14 C which can feel pleasant on sunny days but chilly when it’s cloudy or rainy. “And then we’re going downhill from here.”

Last year marked the first snowfall for the area on November 9th. While Kimbell couldn’t predict exactly when snow would return, he suggested being ready just in case.

“I hate to say it, but the white stuff is not too far away,” he said.
