The Waterloo Region District School Board and the Waterloo Catholic District School Board are making staff reductions as they prepare for the upcoming school year.
In total, both boards will see 148 teachers declared surplus, made redundant, or placed in long-term occasional roles while waiting for full-time positions to open up.
At the public school board, there are 97 elementary teachers and 22 secondary teachers who have been declared surplus or transitioned into occasional roles.
“Due to declining enrolment across the province, the Ontario government has advised school boards to take a conservative approach to staffing,” said Scott Miller, director of education for the WRDSB, in a statement. “At this time, the WRDSB is taking precautionary measures to ensure secondary staffing for 2026-27 school year reflects system needs and available funding resources.”
At the Catholic board, 29 elementary teachers have been let go; however, Director of Education Annalisa Varano is optimistic that most or all of these positions can be saved.
“These decisions are never taken lightly. We are grateful for the contributions every educator makes to our students and school communities,” said Varano.
