Ontario’s Southeast Public Health (SEPH) unit is alerting residents in the Kingston area about a rise in gastrointestinal illness cases and sharing tips on how to prevent it from spreading.

According to the Public Health Agency of Canada, around 90 percent of stomach flu cases are caused by norovirus.

PHAC monitors norovirus cases through its National Enteric Surveillance program. Its latest report, last year, indicated a steady increase in cases from 2019 to 2023.

Typical symptoms of norovirus include diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, fever and fatigue.

Gastrointestinal illnesses spread easily. Public health units throughout Ontario are encouraging community members to take action to help reduce transmission.

Ottawa Public Health has reported 11 outbreaks of gastrointestinal illnesses in facilities across the city so far this year. One outbreak has been confirmed as norovirus, while the other 10 remain unspecified.

The best way to prevent spread is through handwashing. SEPH notes that unlike common respiratory viruses and COVID-19, hand sanitizer does not protect against stomach illnesses.

Other suggestions include staying home when sick and remaining at home for 48 hours after diarrhea has ceased.

If symptoms worsen or diarrhea lasts more than 48 hours, reach out to your healthcare provider.
