The smoke from wildfires in northern Ontario has lifted from the Waterloo region, leading to better air quality. As a result, outdoor activities that were put on hold last week can now take place again.

Outdoor pools have opened up, summer camps will be back outside for their activities, and non-essential outdoor work in local cities is set to restart.

In Cambridge, North Dumfries Township, and Woolwich Township, fire bans that were put into place last week have now been lifted.

“Wildfire-related conditions may continue to fluctuate. The city will continue to monitor conditions and share updates as needed,” the City of Cambridge says on its website.

Ontario’s Air Quality Health Index rated both Guelph and Kitchener at a two on Monday morning, indicating low risk. This comes after readings soared above ten last week and over the weekend due to smoke drifting south.

The Environment and Climate Change Canada forecast predicts a sunny day in Waterloo region for Monday with a high of 26 C, feeling like 29 C when factoring in humidity, along with a UV index of nine-classified as very high.

There’s a 70 percent chance of showers on Tuesday along with possible thunderstorms. The temperature will reach 23 C but may feel like 31 C due to the humidex.

Provincial officials reported there were 146 active wildfires burning across northwestern Ontario as of Sunday evening. Among those fires, 51 are not controlled yet; seven are being held; eight are under control; and 80 are under observation.
