As a rural Ontario community copes with the sorrow from a fatal crash, the provincial police are gearing up for a new safety campaign.

The Perth County detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police plans to launch a public awareness initiative next week that focuses on the risks associated with intersections.

It reports that between 2021 and 2025, nearly 5,000 vehicle collisions were documented, with about one-fourth of those happening at intersections.

This effort comes in response to a tragic two-vehicle accident on Friday night at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12 in Mapleton Township, located northwest of Kitchener.

Authorities state that five children lost their lives, and an infant was among six others who were hurt after a van carrying ten people crashed into an SUV occupied by just one individual.

Officials mention that those injured remain hospitalized, noting it may take days or weeks before further information about the incident is released.

The OPP continues its investigation to clarify all details surrounding the crash.
