A restaurant in Waterloo has had its liquor license put on hold and has been forced to shut down temporarily.

Bodega Rose opened at the corner of Erb and Regina streets in early 2023.

Since then, it has received mostly positive feedback online, offering “local ingredients, daily baked goods, handcrafted cocktails, infused spirits and bitters, a perfectly paired wine list and a coffee selection using beans from a top-notch Canadian roaster,” according to the website.

The establishment’s liquor license was suspended indefinitely as of March 26 by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), with the explanation that this action was “necessary in the public interest.”

“The AGCO’s mandate is to protect the public interest by supporting the integrity and sustainability of the sectors we regulate and by helping reduce the risk of harm to the public. An immediate suspension is a regulatory measure that can only be used in limited circumstances where the AGCO can demonstrate that it is necessary in the public interest,” said the AGCO Communications Team in an email to 570 News Radio.

“This tool is typically utilized to mitigate risk while other processes continue. Under the legislation, licensees also have the right to seek a review of an immediate suspension order through the process set out in law.”

In the meantime, it seems like Bodega Rose is closed for now, with a sign on its door stating “we hope to see you soon.”
