A man who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for various violent crimes has been taken into custody after York Regional Police (YRP) reported his involvement in an armed home invasion in Vaughan, where he was shot by one of the residents before escaping.

The event occurred around 12:50 a. m. on Tuesday at a home close to Carrville Woods Circle and Crimson Forest Drive near Rutherford Road. Police stated they received calls about a shooting and arrived to find that the suspects had already left the scene.

Officers indicated that multiple suspects, with at least one carrying a firearm, broke into the house. During the altercation, they said a resident accessed a legally owned and properly stored firearm and fired at the intruders.

The suspects drove away in a black pickup truck before law enforcement arrived. Fortunately, no one inside the residence sustained physical injuries.

After reviewing evidence from the scene, authorities determined that no charges would be filed against the homeowner who used their firearm.

“We recognize that in a situation involving armed intruders, the immediate threat to life is paramount as every situation is unique,” said Acting Chief Cecile Hammond. “The Criminal Code allows for every person to use reasonable force to protect themselves and their family, only when necessary. Depending on the circumstances of each incident, homeowners can still be held liable for their actions.”

A video released by investigators shows masked suspects entering the property just moments prior to the shooting.

Police have not provided any details regarding the victims of this home invasion but mentioned there was a middle-aged man and an elderly woman present during the incident.

Injured Suspect Taken to Toronto Hospital: Police

About three hours later, around 3:15 a. m., police were informed that a man with a gunshot wound had been brought to a hospital in Toronto. Investigators quickly established that this injury resulted from the earlier Vaughan home invasion.

The injured individual remains hospitalized in stable condition while under police custody. He has been identified as Trestin Casanova-Alman, 24, currently without a fixed address. He faces charges of robbery with a firearm and disguise with intent related to this home invasion. Additionally, he is charged with violating probation since police confirmed he was under an outstanding probation order for unrelated offenses at that time.

The YRP reports that Casanova-Alman is sought by several law enforcement agencies across Ontario and Quebec due to violent offenses. He was previously identified as a suspect in Project Wrangler, which targeted a violent criminal network operating across both provinces back in December 2025.

He was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant. He participated in an armed home invasion in Vaughan.

The YRP stated on Tuesday that it appears similar vehicles were used both during the robbery and when dropping off the man who suffered from gunshot wounds.

“It’s a similar vehicle; make, model and color,” noted YRP Superintendent Jim Kilby.

Investigators have yet to clarify whether this residence was specifically targeted or if there was any acquaintance between those involved.

The investigation continues with updates expected as more information becomes available. Authorities are urging anyone who may have information or dashcam footage from around that area to reach out.
