When summer rolls around in Ontario, everyone suddenly becomes a beach authority. Folks claim they know the finest stretch of sand within driving distance of Toronto, and every chat somehow wraps up with someone insisting their beach has the clearest water, softest sand, or best parking situation.
So naturally, I felt compelled to rank them.
Some beaches are worth an entire day trip, while others are better suited for volleyball games, picnics, or simply enjoying the sunset. And yes, one beach ended up lower on my list than I expected because I’ve always believed it wasn’t safe for swimming.
Here’s how I would rank the top beaches in Ontario close to Toronto.
#8. Sugar Beach
I realize this isn’t exactly a traditional beach, but it had to be included because so many people suggest it as a summer hangout.
The downside? You can’t swim there. Instead, Sugar Beach serves more as an urban waterfront park where you can relax under its iconic pink umbrellas, read a book, or enjoy the skyline. It’s undeniably beautiful and one of Toronto’s most Instagram-worthy locations; however, when I’m craving a true beach day, I want to get in the water. For that reason alone, Sugar Beach sits at the bottom of my rankings.
#7. Woodbine Beach
I know this is a city favorite and I can see why. I’m still convinced swimming here isn’t recommended-not because it’s illegal but because I’ve always heard that you shouldn’t swim in those waters. Now when I see people swimming there, I just assume they’re taking risks with their health.
Turns out I’m only partially right.
Like many Lake Ontario beaches, swimming is discouraged for 24 to 48 hours after heavy rain due to high bacteria levels; however on days when testing shows safe conditions, swimming is definitely allowed.
But will I be taking a dip?
Probably not.
Woodbine remains one of Toronto’s most popular beaches. It’s spacious with plenty of room for volleyball games and activities like paddleboarding and kayaking; plus there’s also the Donald D. Summerville Olympic Pools right next door if you’d prefer an actual pool (which is where you’ll find me).
That said though, it’s also the busiest beach in town-sometimes you’ll notice rocky sand-and occasionally you’ll catch an unpleasant odor from the nearby sewage treatment plant reminding you that you’re still very much in Toronto.
#6. Cherry Beach
Cherry Beach boasts one of the cleanest reputations for swimming in Toronto and consistently receives Blue Flag certification; it’s also among the city’s biggest kiteboarding hotspots.
If you’re imagining soft white sand and classic beach vibes though-this probably isn’t your spot.
The shoreline is rocky and gets deep pretty quickly; plus it can get really windy at times too. After heavy rainfalls runoff might affect water quality as well-so checking conditions beforehand is definitely wise here too.
The real charm lies around Cherry Beach itself.
You’ll find an enormous off-leash dog park along with plenty of shade from mature trees; access to Martin Goodman Trail means you can bike or stroll easily too-and there’s enough space for picnics that it feels more like a waterfront park than just another standard beach setup!>
#5. Hanlan’s Point Beach
This spot deserves recognition for something much bigger than merely being another fun place by water’s edge!
This location stands out as Canada’s oldest surviving queer space boasting nearly 100 years filled with LGBTQ+ history-which makes it incredibly significant!
Additionally-it’s officially clothing-optional-which brings even more diversity into play here! That’s why this ranks nicely smack dab middle on my list-it deserves accolades while also acknowledging its significance! But keep in mind-a unique kind atmosphere exists that warrants respect-making sure visitors understand its rich backstory matters greatly!>
#4. Crystal Beach
If Lake Ontario doesn’t quite do it for you then Crystal Beach just might hit all those sweet spots instead!>
This gem located over Fort Erie near Lake Erie features clearer warmer waters resembling vacation vibes unlike anything else nearby…>
The gorgeous white sands come equipped with modern facilities including washrooms changing rooms lockers plus accessible boardwalk leading straight towards shoreline itself!>
Easier yet? After soaking up some sun-you can wander through surrounding village brimming full ice cream parlors patios cozy cafés local boutiques galore!
The only downside? Getting there without having car isn’t exactly simple-that’s why planning overnight trips seems way smarter rather trying cramming everything into single day instead!>
#3. Bluffer’s Park Beach
I forget each time visiting Bluffer’s Park-you’d think weren’t technically still within limits’ city borders at all!
Those towering Scarborough Bluffs appearing majestically above shoreline totally transport feel almost like stepping onto sandy shores found somewhere exotic perhaps closer west coast Vancouver… Bluffer’s offers Blue Flag certified options allowing swims alongside ample spaces available specifically designed host volleyball matches picnic gatherings marinas shaded areas assuring comfort spending hours lounging peacefully throughout afternoons outdoors!
