Changes Proposed for Wasaga Beach Provincial Park

The Ford government is looking to make changes to the Provincial Parks and Conservation Reserves Act. This would allow more than three per cent of Wasaga Beach Provincial Park to be removed from protection and handed over to the Town of Wasaga Beach and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Gaming for development purposes.

Currently, if over 50 hectares or one per cent of a provincial park is to be taken out, a study, report, and approval by the Ontario Legislature are required. Experts believe that in order to facilitate this land transfer – which involves taking over 60 hectares – the province would need to first remove that critical safeguard from the Act.

Tim Gray, executive director of Environmental Defence, warns that this change would allow the province to easily take parts of parks without any public oversight. It could also set a precedent for privatizing protected lands across Ontario.

“If that clause is repealed, the cabinet could quietly remove parts of any provincial park in Ontario whenever they want without the public knowing and without the legislature voting on it,” Gray said.

In its announcement, the government mentioned an amendment but didn’t specify which part would be altered. reached out to the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks for clarification but did not get a response before publication.

The Ford government has previously proposed numerous legislative changes aimed at speeding up resource development and transferring environmentally protected public land to private interests. This includes initiatives like the Greenbelt land swap, plans for Ontario Place redevelopment, and proposals for a landfill in Dresden.

Although officials claim that removing land from Wasaga Beach is meant to enhance tourism efforts, environmental advocates are expressing concern about both local effects as well as broader implications.

Gray points out that this move reflects a larger trend under Ford’s leadership: converting public lands into private ownership by changing laws.

Environmental concerns

The targeted areas include sensitive sand dunes, wetlands, and nesting habitats for endangered piping plovers. Tony Morris, conservation director at Ontario Nature, notes that giving these lands over to town authorities puts wildlife as well as long-standing conservation efforts at risk.

Morris mentions that Ontario Parks has been managing this area for years by restoring dunes and safeguarding habitats. If these lands fall under town control, those protections may vanish.

Without provisions from the Provincial Parks Act in effect, Morris argues there would be no obligation for the town to maintain ecological health on this land.

He questions why such a transfer is necessary since Wasaga Beach already stands as Ontario’s most-visited provincial park.

“There’s not a lot of information on why this is necessary. What’s the business case?” Morris said.

Both Environmental Defence and Ontario Nature plan on submitting formal comments regarding their concerns about potential risks facing piping plovers – species protected at federal levels – directly to Ford’s administration while also notifying federal environment ministers about these issues.

Earlier this year, Ford announced an investment worth $38 million aimed at developing “Destination Wasaga” – a tourism initiative focused on revitalizing Nancy Island along with upgrading roads while also transferring portions of provincial parkland back into municipal hands. The province states it aims at boosting tourism rates alongside creating jobs while growing local economies through these actions.

‘Wouldn’t have it any other way’

The proposed changes do not clarify whether transferred parcels will be sold off to private developers down-the-line either.

In response via email communication Brian Smith confirmed mayoral intentions stating “the town seeks around 60 hectares related specifically toward potential transfers coming from within Wasaga Beach Provincial Park.” He insists these lands won’t go into private hands but instead stay with municipality ensuring continued public access remains intact throughout future developments too!

“The plan is collaborating with province reimagining large swathes crumbling paved parking lots located near Beach Area 1,” says Smith commenting further on benefits expected through partnerships made possible between townspeople involved designing projects together! “Town citizens wouldn’t wish things happen differently!”

Morris states they’re dedicated towards establishing sustainable waterfront destinations catering eco-tourism objectives while maintaining ease-of-accessibility publicly available spaces alike beachfronts available during summer seasons amongst many others valued amenities offered here too!.

The Town recently pursued various redevelopment opportunities concerning Beach Area One including selling off several pieces previously designated open-public beachfront property totaling millions paid out developers interested purchasing them away!On their website , town officials express interest actively searching “visionary partner” helping transform current waterfront sites turning globally recognized destinations. They emphasize importance finding proper partners assisting achieve benchmarks representing exemplary sustainable urban design practices soon after completion expected improvements made visible eventually !!

Gray believes follows same pattern suggesting new parkland likely end up being directed likewise going forward much alike recent cases had occurred previously seen happening elsewhere locally where such decisions being discussed openly right now only heightens risk associated overall impacts resulting thereafter caused due inadequate transparency surrounding all aspects involved therein…

“There’s no guarantee these parklands won’t be next,” he said.

Mike Schreiner , leader Green Party Ontariosays Ford repeat pattern removal vital protections reminiscent Bill 5-now placing our precious provincial parks jeopardy entirely potentially !

“He seems prioritizing benefiting wealthy insiders putting rest provinces remaining green spaces endangered rather danger challenging every single day we face ahead trying ensure their survival. ”Schreiner called upon residents rallying together push back against happening anymore before irreversible damages occur anymore whatsoever!!..
Schreiner went onto state further “Our parks home various species currently facing risks vital wetlands ecological features serve crucial functions protecting nearby communities flooding extreme weather conditions simultaneously. These cherished places families enjoy camping hiking swimming paddling connecting themselves each other nature.”

What’s next

Proposed alterations still require vote within Queen’s Park however decision-making will only commence once legislature reconvenes late October presently ongoing discussions concerning matters arise shortly afterward concluded successfully achieved finalizations relevant review periods established leading forward timeline projected accordingly anticipated based progress attained therefore necessary preparations finalized indeed.

Gray urges everyone take immediate action contacting their MPPs expressing opposition stating clearly our provincial parks belong everyone residing Ontarians should remain safeguarded above all else protecting especially recreational activities fostering growth communal bonds built society-wide too !.

“It saddening witnessing current governments attempting give vast tracts popular outdoor attractions away facilitating easier future giveaways occurring repeatedly anytime soon thereafter-these prime beachside locations Georgian Bay hold immense value serve dedicated community members collectively invested ownership wise throughout generations past present thus never ought offered freely towards connected affluent parties entering realm commerce exclusively!!!.”
