In front of a packed audience, the Town of Wasaga Beach has shared its initial 10- and 20-year vision and concept sketches for Destination Wasaga – marking a significant step in transforming one of Canada’s most famous beachfronts. This event kicks off the second phase of public input and brings together the community and province towards achieving an exciting vision for a year-round destination that balances nature, tourism, and community needs. “This is a once-in-a-generation moment for Wasaga Beach,” said Mayor Brian Smith. “For over 100 years, people have traveled from all over Ontario and Canada to experience Wasaga Beach and create summer memories that last forever. Now we’re building on that legacy – enhancing our community and quality of life for residents while crafting a globally recognized year-round destination that preserves what makes this place unique. “The draft plan we are presenting today reflects what our community has expressed as important and positions Wasaga Beach as one of the great recreation and nature-focused destinations worldwide.”
A vision focused on local priorities
The draft Destination Wasaga master plan aligns with clear priorities expressed by the community: The beach stays public – always: The shoreline will continue to be safeguarded as accessible space for everyone to enjoy. No housing development on returned parkland: Provincial parkland transferred back to the Town will prioritize tourism, destination development, attractions, public infrastructure, public uses, and green areas. A strong dedication to nature and sustainability: Expanding green spaces, ecological preservation, and nature-driven experiences are central elements of the plan. A balanced year-round destination: The Destination Wasaga master plan aims to bolster the local economy, draw visitors throughout the year, while protecting the natural beauty and ecology that set Wasaga Beach apart globally.Key Features
The draft plan suggests lively gathering spots, adaptable parks and event venues for all seasons, accessible boardwalks, a river marina, an exceptional music hall (The Dard 2.0), along with an iconic pedestrian bridge – all designed to bring people closer to water, nature, and each other. The newly revealed designs depict a downtown area and beachfront that feel both timeless yet innovative: Three key corridors are planned to enhance connections among the waterfront, downtown area, Nancy Island and provincial parkland – creating a more cohesive experience for residents and visitors alike.A community-driven plan – including young voices
The draft Destination Wasaga master plan stems from extensive public feedback starting in November 2025 when over 500 residents and stakeholders shared their thoughts through meetings and online surveys. Recently this engagement reached into local schools where over 200 Grade 6 and Grade 7 students across Wasaga Beach offered their ideas about how they envision their future community and beachfront. Their contributions highlighted crucial priorities – such as environmental protection and attracting fun family-friendly businesses. Students stressed how vital it is to create spaces that kids and future generations can be proud of. This collective input is helping shape a plan reflecting both local needs as well as aspirations from younger voices in our community. What’s next?
Public participation continues April 8-9 with workshops, stakeholder discussions, and an online survey allowing residents more chances to review concepts and share their feedback. Input gathered during this final phase will refine the overall plan, aligning it with upcoming infrastructure projects alongside provincial and federal objectives. The finalized Destination Wasaga plan is expected by July. To find out more, click here. *************************Source link
