WASAGA BEACH, ON – The construction of Wasaga Beach’s first high school and community hub has officially begun, bringing local students closer to having a high school in their neighborhood.
Today, representatives from the Town of Wasaga Beach, Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board, Province of Ontario, and community partners came together to mark the groundbreaking of the new campus at 486 River Road West.
This initiative reflects a forward-thinking approach by the Town Council in collaboration with the Simcoe Muskoka Catholic District School Board. Instead of waiting for a typical school project to happen independently, they proposed a practical plan that utilizes existing municipal facilities next to the Wasaga Stars Arena and Wasaga Beach Public Library.
This strategy helped secure provincial funding for the Town’s inaugural high school more quickly. For families and students in the area, this project means shorter bus rides out of town, increased classroom time, and more chances to engage in sports, arts, clubs, and other activities within their own community. The new campus will allow local students to learn and thrive in their own environment.
The high school is designed as a K-12 facility. It will accommodate 1,008 students and include 49 licensed childcare spaces, a 300-seat community theater, track-and-field facilities, shared learning spaces, along with opportunities for post-secondary education through partnerships with Canadore College and Lakehead University.
The total investment for this project is $70.1 million. This includes $67.3 million from provincial funding and a $2.8 million contribution from the Town of Wasaga Beach for enhancing theatre options that will benefit both students and residents. The School and Community Hub was also made possible thanks to a generous land donation from Far Sight Homes.
This is one of the largest educational and community infrastructure projects currently taking place in Ontario.
