Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit has announced that a male officer from York Regional Police has been charged with sexual assault and breach of trust related to alleged incidents that took place in Vaughan more than a year ago.
In a statement released on Wednesday, SIU director Joseph Martino mentioned he has “reasonable grounds” to believe that the officer committed criminal offenses in December 2023.
The SIU was informed about the alleged offenses by police on February 7, 2024. Following this, the SIU initiated an investigation that led to the two charges. The timing of when these charges were officially laid was not disclosed.
The release did not identify the officer or specify his rank.
According to the SIU, the officer made his initial court appearance at a Newmarket courthouse on June 24, 2025, and will return for another court date on September 16, 2025.
The announcement regarding the charges was delayed out of respect for the alleged victim, as stated by the SIU.
“The SIU delayed this news release announcing the charges against the officer because of concerns raised about the potential impact on the complainant’s mental health caused by public disclosure of the charges,” said the SIU in their statement.
“Pursuant to section 33(2) of the Special Investigations Unit Act, 2019, the SIU is also omitting the official’s name from this public notice because of concerns that disclosure of the name may result in the identification of the complainant.”
The SIU indicated it wouldn’t provide any further comments on this investigation since it is currently before the courts and they want to ensure a fair trial for the accused.
The SIU is an independent body tasked with investigating police officers’ conduct during events that could lead to death, serious injury, firearm discharge or allegations involving sexual assault.
