A fire at a residence on Major Street in Kitchener is being looked into as suspicious.

The incident occurred on Major Street, close to Wellington Street North and Lancaster Street, around 6 a. m. on Sunday.

Waterloo regional police have confirmed to 570 News Radio that there were no injuries reported.

When firefighters arrived, they found a unit at the back of the two-storey house completely consumed by flames, and police stated that the fire caused extensive damage.

Wellington Street was closed between Lancaster and St. Leger while firefighters worked to control the blaze.

The cause of the fire has not been established yet, but “police are treating the incident as suspicious.”

A statement from the Kitchener Fire Department indicated that damages are estimated to be around $500,000.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshal has been notified to investigate, and local emergency officials will work alongside them.

If anyone has information about this incident, they are urged to contact Waterloo Regional Police at 519-570-9777 or reach out anonymously to Crime Stoppers by calling 1-800-222-8477 or by clicking here.
