A pedestrian has died and another is in critical condition after two vehicles crashed in Richmond Hill on Thursday, with one vehicle hitting three people on a sidewalk, police report.

The incident took place at the intersection of Major Mackenzie Drive and Leslie Street, according to York Regional Police. Officers received reports of a two-vehicle collision at 4:10 p. m.

Upon arrival, officers discovered that three pedestrians had been struck, as stated by Staff Sgt. Stephen Mc Kenzie from York Regional Police. He noted that the individuals were on the sidewalk and not inside a nearby bus shelter.

One pedestrian, a 65-year-old man from Vaughan, was declared dead at the scene. Another pedestrian was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries while the third was taken to hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening.

Authorities are notifying next of kin but have no intention of releasing any details about the victims out of respect for their families, he mentioned.

Mc Kenzie also indicated that the crash knocked down a light pole, which had been uprighted by the time CBC Toronto arrived at the scene on Friday.

He did not have information regarding how fast the vehicles were going and added there’s no evidence suggesting impaired driving played a role in this accident.

Both drivers stayed at the location following the crash, he confirmed.

“Our investigation is ongoing and in its early stages and at this time no further details are available,” Mc Kenzie said.

Witness jumps over a barrier to avoid getting hit

Endre Teleki, who saw the accident unfold, described how a speeding car coming from Major Mackenzie Drive entered the intersection with Leslie Street and collided with another vehicle. He reported calling 911 immediately after witnessing it happen.

Teleki mentioned he was around 15 meters away from where it occurred and jumped off the sidewalk over a barrier to avoid being hit.

“There was a huge crash. I had to jump out of the way so I didn’t get hit by the car,” Teleki said.

“I’m still kind of shocked,” he shared. “It was going crazy speed.”

Police stated that their major collision investigation unit is now overseeing this case and examining all factors that may have contributed to it.

If anyone witnessed this incident or has relevant dashcam footage, they’re encouraged to reach out to police.
