A young man from Vaughan, just 19 years old, has lost his life after a snowmobile crash involving a commercial motor vehicle in northern Ontario on Saturday morning.
Emergency medical personnel and officers from the Ontario Provincial Police’s James Bay detachments arrived at the scene of the accident around 9 a. m. at the intersection of Ontario Federation of Snow Clubs Trail A and 2nd Street in Cochrane, Ont.
“The snowmobile driver, a 19-year-old male from Vaughan, was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased,” OPP said in a news release.
Authorities shut down OFSC Trail A in both directions near 2nd Street and closed off 2nd Street between Nakita Avenue and Western Avenue (Highway 579) to facilitate an investigation into the incident.
“Please avoid the area and use alternate routes,” OPP advised via social media on Saturday morning.
“Expect a prolonged closure during the investigation and clean-up efforts.”
The roads and trail have since reopened; OPP confirmed that everything was cleared shortly after 9 p. m. on March 14.
The OPP is looking into the collision alongside the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario.

This was unfortunately not the only fatal snowmobile incident in northern Ontario that morning. A separate collision occurred on Perry Lake around 1 a. m., resulting in the death of a 65-year-old from Wawa.
