(CNN) – When key Republicans in Congress first got wind of President Donald Trump’s agreement with Iran, many were left speechless.
However, within a day, a considerable group of GOP senators started to voice their doubts about the terms of Trump’s negotiations with Iran – with several suggesting he should completely change his approach.
Some of those who aren’t facing reelection are openly criticizing Trump’s deal. Outgoing Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy summarized it by saying: “Iran’s left stronger, we are left weaker.” Texas Senator John Cornyn, who is also retiring from Congress, remarked: “Everything I’ve heard about it causes me concern.”
“It’s hard to argue that this agreement puts Iran in a worse position and the United States in a better one,” Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski noted. She later added: “A lot of money has been spent and lives lost yet Iran seems to be exactly where they were before.”
The more noteworthy Republican criticisms are coming from figures who typically align closely with Trump.
This rising wave of discontent among Republicans sends a clear message to Trump: Without significant changes to the deal, any final agreement with Iran could struggle to pass – even in a Republican-majority Congress. Some even question whether an agreement will materialize at all, leaving Trump and the GOP stuck in uncertainty that might harm them significantly come November.
According to one anonymous Republican senator discussing party dynamics candidly, there is “a high level of dismay” within Senate GOP ranks. This senator expressed skepticism about reaching any final agreement as they doubt Iran would actually comply.
