Residents of Tillsonburg hoping to enjoy drinks in local parks this summer might need to reconsider.

Following updates to provincial regulations on alcohol use in parks, there’s been some uncertainty about where people can drink. In some cities, like Toronto, there are specific parks where visitors can bring and enjoy alcohol. Unfortunately, that’s not the case in Tillsonburg.

A few changes were made with the recent updates to the province’s alcohol rules. Now, those at provincial parks can consume alcohol in picnic areas, beaches, and other day-use spaces, unlike before when it was limited to individual campsites.

Each municipality creates its own rules for drinking in parks. While Toronto permits alcohol consumption in designated parks, Tillsonburg does not follow suit. Additionally, there’s now an option for bringing-your-own-alcohol events; however, a permit is still necessary.

“As of April 30, municipalities have the option to designate outdoor events as community or cultural events that would be eligible for the new Bring-Your-Own Event permit,” explained Julia Facca, Press Secretary for Attorney General Doug Downey. “The Bring-Your-Own Event permit allows event attendees to bring and consume their own liquor at the event.”

The province implemented these changes to boost local tourism and support economic growth through community festivals and small businesses.

Recently, Tillsonburg council updated its policies so it could designate community or cultural events as eligible for the new bring-your-own-alcohol permit.

The latest update to the Municipal Alcohol Policy gives Council the power to classify community or cultural events as eligible for the new bring-your-own event permit; so far, no applications have been submitted seeking this approval.
