Read more President Donald Trump pushed back against claims that he broke his campaign promises by starting a war with Iran and insisted that this conflict won’t become “endless” during a heated interview this weekend. Trump spoke with NBC’s Kristen Welker in a pre-recorded segment on Meet the Press where he asserted that he expects an end to hostilities with Iran soon, reiterating comments he and his Cabinet have made for months as the conflict continues without resolution. In his latest statements, he described delays as arising from disagreements over terms regarding Iran’s future nuclear capabilities. The president indicated that during his 2024 campaign he differentiated between “wars” and “endless” conflicts, suggesting there was no point in expanding America’s military if it wouldn’t be used. “First of all, I didn’t guarantee no war. Why would I have built the strongest military in the world?” he asked. “When you say I promised, I didn’t promise anything. I don’t like these endless wars. [But] this is not an endless war,” Trump told Welker. Donald Trump fought back against criticism of his war with Iran during an NBC interview (NBC News – Meet the Press) He went on to draw parallels between this conflict and his military operation in Venezuela earlier this year that resulted in U. S. forces capturing ousted leader Nicolás Maduro during a bold nighttime raid. The president believes there are similarities between that event and what’s happening now with Iran, which has been ongoing for over three months without clear progress towards U. S. objectives. “We took over Venezuela in a matter of minutes. We destroyed the capability of Iran in a matter of days. Nobody’s ever seen anything like it,” Trump claimed while contrasting it with what he views as alternative outcomes. “Remember, you were in Vietnam 19 years because of stupid people,” he said. “You were in so many different countries. Every war you were involved in lasted years. Look at Iraq; you were there for years.” Trump launched his 2024 presidential campaign amid ongoing concerns about Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and growing discontent within President Joe Biden’s party due to actions taken against Gaza. Much of Trump’s foreign policy stance revolves around criticizing Biden’s handling of these two situations which he argues spiraled out due to weak U. S leadership. However, despite what he claimed during his NBC interview, Trump assured supporters he’d refrain from initiating wars himself: “I’m not going to start a war; I’m going to stop wars,” he declared during one speech after announcing his candidacy for re-election.
