WILLIAM BRANGHAM: To talk about the surprising results in Wisconsin’s Democratic primary this week, along with the ongoing situation between the U. S.

and Iran, and more, we have Brooks and Atkins Stohr joining us.

That’s David Brooks from “The Atlantic” and Kimberly Atkins Stohr of The Boston Globe.

Jonathan Capehart is away today.

Happy Friday to you both.

DAVID BROOKS: Thank you.

KIMBERLY ATKINS STOHR: Hi there.

Thanks for having us.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: David, let’s dive into what happened in Wisconsin.

The Democratic primary for governor had a significant upset where David Crowley entered this race looking like he was going to lose badly.

But he managed to pull off a win against Democratic Socialist Francesca Hong.

Do you think voters just didn’t see Hong as a strong candidate for a statewide run, or was there more going on?

DAVID BROOKS: It’s important to point out that David Crowley dropped out of the race about a month ago.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Right.

DAVID BROOKS: He only rejoined it recently, just a month back.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Exactly right.

DAVID BROOKS: So never give up, kids!(LAUGHTER) DAVID BROOKS: People are asking if this marks the end of the DSA moment?

(That’s Democratic Socialists of America.)

DAVID BROOKS: I don’t think so. I believe Francesca Hong was particularly unfit as a candidate-not only because some of her views might seem extreme but also due to all those personal issues she had highlighted on social media during this woke era. She even took shots at Thanksgiving!

DAVID BROOKS: And her stance on holidays like Valentine’s Day raised eyebrows-those positions were pretty odd at times. When she faced tough questions during big TV interviews, she struggled. Instead of acknowledging that she might have changed her mind-which is what Mamdani suggested she should do-she couldn’t do it.The end result wasn’t great for her.

I don’t believe this outcome reflects poorly on socialists overall; rather, I think it shows how uniquely poor Francesca was as a candidate leading to that drop in polling toward the end.

WILLIAM BRANGHAM: Kimberly, Republicans seemed eager to run against Hong-now they won’t get that opportunity in this election.

I wonder if you see their strategy as purely pragmatic or if Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks about being glad the woke 1.0 era is over hold some weight?

KIMBERLY ATKINS STOHR: Absolutely! I believe several factors are influencing this situation.

I agree with you; candidates really do matter-having strong candidates can outweigh many other aspects in an election.

I also feel gubernatorial races often operate differently than national ones. A state like Massachusetts has been heavily blue but still elects Republican governors because voters appreciate checks and balances.

You can’t necessarily draw conclusions about congressional races from these results.

KIMBERLY ATKINS STOHR:‘In terms of whether woke 2.0 improves upon woke 1.0… Voters appear to respond better to candidates who address current needs directly.'<boldIn 2020.. we faced various crises-a pandemic lockdown brought urgency along with visible police brutality.. The Trump administration’s issues created immediate pressures. Right now, economic concerns dominate discussions among voters.. They’re hearing messages focusing on affordability issues such as rising gas prices or housing costs-and it’s resonating strongly with them. That seems like something Republicans are struggling hard against right now.
‘.

Makes sense?

DAVIS BROS. BKS:‘It seems fitting!’ It’s clear different factors influence races based on context... They have new perspectives emerging because.. conditions change within individual states depending upon situations impacting voter decisions.. like Mamdani not winning Iowa!. However AOC’s observation reflects ongoing shifts present today regarding Democrats responding effectively within their environments.”<B/.

BROOK: BROO’COMMITTEES It made perfect sense!.. I wholeheartedly agree!: I mean many people faced potential job loss when voicing thoughts considered offensive.. ‘Public discourse was notably restricted especially across college campuses-it shaped student behavior.’

‘Many students report feeling unable–70% say they can’t express genuine beliefs publicly.’ It seems evident enough time elapsed before Trump’s emergence as President..’I mean his impactful ad aimed at contrasts represented two divisions present within politics’..”They/them versus you.” Those sentiments represent sentiments echoed through yesterday’s discussions too!’
THE W. BR.: Let me clarify further regarding suggestions posed by critics concerning underlying Republican connections indicating difficulties surrounding Trump aligning tightly..’ True assessments reveal challenges facing him reflected upon polls showing decreasing support addressing core priorities such as immigration policies.’ Meanwhile popular opinion shows stark disagreement stemming from policies instituted recently..'<KIMBERLY ATKINS STOHR: I perceive multiple realities unfolding simultaneously here': On one hand Donald Trump's administration illustrates failures while critics identify broader scope.. his tactics undermine democratic norms affecting our overall society."

B/KATS:’yes exactly’: however–there remains backlash resulting derived outcomes linking Democratic distancing efforts largely initiated by previous leaders could possibly add complications down line’!’

MANY DEMOCRATICS NEED TO CREATE LARGE TENTS WHERE IDEAS CAN FLOURISH AMONGST DIFFERENT VOICES IN ORDER FOR THEM TO BUILD UPON NEW OPPORTUNITIES ARISING.’

B/Brooks:”So true! Remember neoliberalism characterized eras when Clinton & Obama led presidencies which subsequently faded bringing two contrasting ideologies forth including MAGA movement alongside principles promoted by Kendi/Du Angelo embracing leftist platforms consistently under scrutiny today.”

“Ultimately seeing cracks develop across existing structures raises questions surrounding future leadership dynamics ahead-what lies next?”<PO/PONTIFICAL G. E/POINTING OUT IRAN'S SITUATION:PIVOTING FINALLY BACK OVER TO IRAN AS WAR HAS ESCALATED LEADING INTO UNRESOLVED STALEMATE POINT…’K/STOHR:”THE DISASTER NOT ONLY IMPACTED POCKETBOOK BUT MILITARY POWER TOO!”‘ ‘Difficulties continue intensifying amidst dwindling resources available driving up costs every time consumers fill tanks causing widespread stress.. Reports show declining morale aboard USS Abraham Lincoln where troops face discouragement leading distressing cases emerging!’: Indeed true.. Currently my concern revolves around declarations surrounding victory claims based solely influenced American territories involved nearby locations concurrently disregarded international rights apply throughout respective nations involved therein sometimes complicating matters even further-I sincerely question viability behind attempts persuading Iranian governing authorities whenever reliance depends heavily relating military arsenal threats!”<W. BR. K "Tell that statement directly directed towards those piloting oil vessels passing through straits daily prior encountering armed conflicts ahead! As shifting battlefield dynamics reflect drastically favored parties here outweighing capabilities remaining active across naval lines needing constant surveillance assignments performed without fail moving forward!”Each side must ensure smooth operations regardless possible confrontations occurring involving tankers transporting vital resources essential maintaining economic stability worldwide connected globally facilitating trade exchanges reaching back home countries alike..” “<I'll provide additional updates later regarding situations evolving progressively connecting militarily remains paramount establishment preserving peace through diplomatic means forging alliances likewise ensuring every aspect accounted properly thereafter!"<<BRAKH/K/MY CONCLUSION IS REVEALING LONG TERM PROBLEMS EMERGING WITHIN OUR STRUCTURE SURROUNDING THE STRATEGIC NATURE ENTERTAINED TODAY MUST CONTINUE MOVING FORWARD USING EDUCATIONAL NETWORK SYSTEM CAPABILITIES STILL PROVIDE MAXIMUM BENEFITS ENHANCEMENTS MEETING CHALLENGES PRESENTED WHILE ADDRESSING REALISTIC SOLUTIONS DELIVERABLE ACROSS ALL AREAS REQUIRED MOVEMENT FOCUS GRASSROOT LEVEL RELATIONSHIPS LINKED TOGETHER HELP US UNDERSTAND WHAT LIES BEYOND CLARIFY OUR COMMON INTEREST PLANS POTENTIAL PATHWAY REBUILD TRAJECTORY!"
