A man from Minnesota, who admitted to killing a prominent Democratic legislator and trying to murder another, was sentenced to life in federal prison on Thursday. This comes 13 months after he impersonated a police officer and attacked the lawmakers at their homes.
Vance Boelter, 59, received consecutive life sentences plus an additional 40 years from US District Court Judge John Tunheim in Minneapolis. He pleaded guilty in June to six charges, including murder, as part of a deal with prosecutors that spared him from facing the death penalty.
“Political violence is not just an attack on the immediate victims but also threatens our communities, democratic institutions, and the rule of law,” stated Acting US Attorney Todd Blanche.
Boelter wore a silicone mask and dressed in a police uniform while driving an SUV marked with “Police” when he carried out the shootings late at night on June 14, 2025.
After ringing the doorbell and getting inside, Boelter shot and killed Melissa Hortman, who was the top Democrat in the Minnesota House of Representatives, along with her husband Mark. Earlier that evening, he also shot state Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette at their home nearby.

Targeted Two More Lawmakers’ Homes
Authorities reported that Boelter also visited two other lawmakers’ homes that night; however, no one answered at one residence while he fled from another when approached by a police officer who thought he was another officer. In his vehicle, investigators discovered a list containing more than 45 Minnesota officials. Authorities captured Boelter two days later following what became known as the largest manhunt in state history. These shootings have brought attention to the rise of political violence across the United States in recent years. Mark Hortman’s father criticized authorities for agreeing to a plea deal according to newspaper reports. He mentioned trying to reach out to Blanche but felt dismissed. In response to inquiries regarding this case’s handling, a Justice Department spokesperson stated that considerations are always made regarding victims’ families’ opinions before deciding whether or not to pursue capital punishment cases specifically. “Even if capital punishment seems like it should be applied here due to circumstances surrounding this crime,” they added without elaborating on specific legal hurdles involved with Boelter’s case., “there might be significant legal issues making it impossible.” Following his plea agreement last June , US Attorney Daniel Rosen remarked about how pursuing death penalty options could have been feasible had there not been such an opportunity available where ensuring lifetime imprisonment without parole seemed better suited given circumstances surrounding guilt acceptance rather than risking lengthy courtroom battles over appeals processes involved otherwise.” Before receiving his sentence , Boelter gave a brief apology during court proceedings. “To everyone whose lives I’ve impacted negatively – causing loss , pain , heartache , confusion , sadness , shame or loneliness – I sincerely apologize,” he expressed according tothe Star Tribune.self.__next_f. push([1,”0:[“$”,”$L9″, null,{..}]);Source link
