WASHINGTON – A self-proclaimed spy tricked the CIA into giving him $40 million in gold bars, claiming it was for “work-related expenses.” This is just the latest in a long line of bold fabrications, according to federal prosecutors.

David Rush made multiple requests to the agency for “a significant quantity” of foreign currency and hundreds of gold bars from November to March, as stated in a federal affidavit.

Remarkably, Rush got what he wanted, according to court documents. The agency later couldn’t find any record of Rush providing a valid work-related explanation for such massive amounts.

When the FBI searched his Virginia home on May 18, they discovered $2 million in cash, 35 luxury watches – “many of which” were Rolexes – and over 300 one-kilogram gold bars valued at more than $40 million.

The value of gold has surged by 164% this year, greatly inflating the worth of his alleged scheme.

Court documents also claimed that the FBI investigation found Rush had given false information about his education and military background for years-using each lie to climb higher within both military and government ranks.

In three different job applications to join the CIA, he allegedly falsely stated that he held degrees from Clemson University in South Carolina and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Upstate New York – as well as a certification from the US Naval Test Pilot School.

None of these claims were true, according to the affidavit. An undated assertion in one application claimed he had earned a master’s degree in computing technology from the Naval Postgraduate School; that too was inaccurate.

However, this deception apparently worked for decades. Rush achieved his goal of working for the CIA while allegedly continuing to embellish his achievements for career advancement and financial gain.

Neighbors living near Rush’s $975,000 home in an upscale northern Virginia neighborhood reported hearing the FBI raid unfolding inside their homes on May 18. One woman initially thought it was just noise from her TV.

This woman mentioned she often saw Rush and his wife playing with their two young kids outside but said they never chatted with each other.

An additional neighbor recounted waking up to a loudspeaker outside demanding him to come out.
He described how their normally quiet street was lined with FBI vehicles including an armored personnel carrier while many agents were armed and dressed in tactical gear.

As the raid went on into the afternoon hours, this neighbor noted seeing FBI agents pushing dolly carts loaded with large cardboard boxes out of the house.

The neighbor admitted not knowing Rush or his family well.
“We’ll see each other in passing and say ‘hey how’s it going’ but that’s about it.”

He added that since the raid took place he hadn’t spoken with anyone from their family.

In a form submitted back in 2009 when seeking top-secret security clearance with CIA, Rush claimed he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics and information systems from Clemson University back in 2000 along with a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from RPI four years later.
Both schools told investigators they have no records showing that Rush ever attended them; likely due to this false connection he managed to secure better paychecks over time.

Investigators highlighted that federal employee salaries are influenced by factors like educational qualifications. A worker holding a master’s degree like what Rush falsely claimed “would generally be expected to receive a higher pay scale” compared to colleagues without such credentials.

He also created an entirely false story regarding his military service just so he could profit more-complete with inflated rank claims along with assertions about being an experienced pilot while taking unauthorized military leave benefits.
In one application submitted back in 2018 seeking entry into CIA’s Senior Executive Service rank level; He stated having graduated from Air Force Test Pilot School while even claiming responsibility as director overseeing operations at joint Army/Navy weapons testing organization comprising 145 personnel across 18 aircrafts!

No evidence backed any dubious assertions after investigators examined records confirming there wasn’t proof supporting claims about being Navy pilot nor completing evaluations necessary becoming certified pilots either!
