From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it’s investigating the financials of Elon Musk’s pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, ‘The A Word’, which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging. At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story. The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it. Your support makes all the difference. Read more CNN’s polling expert has warned that President Donald Trump can “wave adios, amigos” to Republican control of Congress if his poor approval ratings on inflation don’t get better. On CNN News Central Monday morning, chief data analyst Harry Enten turned to some 90s pop culture references to explain how badly Trump is doing on one of the major issues affecting his chances in 2024. “Americans say inflation is the number one issue facing them right now. And to quote the great Happy Gilmore, according to them, ‘the price is wrong’ when it comes to the President of the United States,” Enten said. That was in reference to Adam Sandler’s 1996 golfing comedy where the main character fights The Price is Right host Bob Barker and then says: “The price is wrong, b****.” Enten then shared polls from NBC, CBS, Ipsos, and others showing Trump’s net approval ratings on inflation ranging from -36 to -47 points. Trump, who enjoys golfing frequently, recently mentioned that he ‘hoped’ gas prices would drop by the 2026 midterms but noted they could be ‘a little bit higher’ (Brendan Smialowski/AFP via Getty Images) “Across all these polls, Trump finds himself in his worst position ever regarding an issue that Americans consistently identify as their top concern,” Enten stated. This comes after U. S. inflation experienced its largest year-on-year jump since May 2024 due in part to Trump’s conflict with Iran that has disrupted global oil supplies and caused fuel prices to surge. The situation has raised alarms among many of Trump’s political allies; one anonymous GOP House member told Politico: “If you are a Republican and not concerned right now, you are stupid.” Despite this alarmism, Trump’s National Economic Council Director Kevin Hassett told CNBC Monday morning: “The golden age that President Trump promised is starting to be very visible in profit data but also more importantly in wage data.”Source link
