Can $1 billion power the GOP to victory in the midterms? Some campaigns fear it's too late

WASHINGTON (AP) – As Republicans head into the last month of the midterm race, there’s growing worry that the $1 billion they have might not be sufficient to avoid major losses. The party is grappling with President Donald Trump’s low approval ratings, ongoing concerns about costs, and the impact of the conflict in Iran.

The financial edge, distributed among several groups, mainly comes from the Trump-supporting MAGA Inc., which reported nearly $416 million available at the end of August and started increasing its spending on key races in September.

However, this influx of cash may have arrived too late. The president’s organization now faces much higher advertising rates due to limited air time availability. Four Republican Senate campaign officials noted that groups that booked ads earlier paid significantly lower rates than MAGA Inc. and its associated organizations.

By waiting until September to spend money, Trump-linked groups are often paying over five times more than if they had acted sooner.

A spokesperson for MAGA Inc., who wished to remain anonymous regarding strategy discussions, mentioned that their spending has kept races more competitive than they otherwise would be. In some instances, their group has been the only one airing ads attacking Democratic candidates.

The MAGA Inc. representative and Republican Senate campaign officials spoke anonymously to discuss internal strategy.

This challenge is particularly evident in Texas, where Trump visited on Wednesday for a second time within a week to support Republican Ken Paxton’s Senate bid. The state hasn’t elected a Democratic senator since 1988; however, MAGA Inc. has spent over $22 million in just the past month according to Ad Impact.

Another organization called Texas PAC, aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, has invested more than $83 million on s recently-a striking amount aimed at defending what is typically a secure Republican seat.

One featured Paxton’s estranged wife endorsing him and aired nationwide during a football game between the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans last weekend.

Candidates benefit from lower ad rates compared to outside groups; thus this late influx of super PAC funding is costing them dearly.

MAGA Inc., which primarily runs ads on streaming platforms, is being charged around $894 per airing according to Ad Impact. Meanwhile, Texas PAC pays about $809 for both broadcast and streaming options. In contrast, Democratic nominee James Talarico’s campaign spends roughly $290 across similar channels.

The averages hide some significant differences; during a recent football game in Austin market alone, Texas PAC was billed $450,000 for one spot while Talarico’s campaign only paid $50,000 for an equivalent ad during that same game there according to Ad Impact.

Elections reflect financial power dynamics

The upcoming 2026 campaign appears poised as a test of how influential money can be in American politics. Democrats readily admit they’re at a disadvantage but are banking on anti-Trump feelings among voters along with focused messaging about issues like corruption. Some Republicans acknowledge it’s tough trying to buy their way out of challenging campaigns this late into the race.

Neil Newhouse, an experienced Republican pollster expressed concern that his party was using its funds too late in the cycle.

“After the votes are counted,” he said “I think we’re going to find the most effective advertising in terms of communicating message and moving voters and poll numbers-was advertising done well before Labor Day rather than afterward.” He added “A million dollars’ worth of advertising in October is just not enough.”

Thune’s group recently started scaling back efforts in North Carolina indicating serious challenges facing them there. Outgoing Sen. Thom Tillis has become vocal about his party’s weaknesses noting even with strong funding advantages it feels like “in the last month you pretty much have to place your bets.”

“If we had endless resources then we should spend endlessly everywhere,” he remarked “But without endless funds you’ve got make data-driven choices regarding where you’re likely able win.”

This midterm will mark America’s first national election since June when Supreme Court lifted limits on political party spending coordinated with congressional candidates or presidential hopefuls-flooding already cash-heavy systems with even more money overall!

Cash doesn’t guarantee success

A lot shows us that having money doesn’t automatically mean victory either!

Dramatically different outcomes occurred when Democrat Kamala Harris entered critical phases during her 2024 run carrying significantly larger amounts than Trump did yet ended up losing every key swing state alongside White House itself! Elon Musk spent $25 million but couldn’t help his choice gain traction towards Wisconsin Supreme Court seat last year while Tom Steyer failed despite investing upwards near-$216 million personally into California governor race!

The considerable amount gathered by Republicans stands against approximately$579million amassed by comparable leading democratic entities!

Sensationally Senator Chuck Schumer expressed alarm claiming they face an “obscene” level competition making things challenging come midterms ahead!

“We’re never going match them dollar-for-dollar,” Schumer stated & emphasized “In summation I put it as follows: Can massive republican financial leverage overpower robust advantages shown through better candidates plus favorable political environment? My bet says no!”

Besides Texas; Democrats have initiated competitive senate bids within states such Ohio, Maine, Iowa, and Michigan displaying similarly heated dynamics rising governors’ elections including those taking place Florida , Georgia , Wisconsin , Ohio & Nevada !

Additionally Former President Barack Obama ramps up efforts involved midterms he’ll headline fundraiser specifically geared towards assisting senate contenders coming Wednesday!

Pare down:Toward House aspects-Dems feel so optimistic regaining majority territory expanding target base deeper stretches traditional GOP-held districts located Arkansas & Tennessee meanwhile lackluster finances could curtail gains achieved !P>”We definitely require adequate budget allocated allowing messages communicated effectively,” Rep. Suzan Del Bene Washington chairwoman DCCC stressed – ”And district-wise investments reflect progress occurring consistently!”

Trump relies heavily upon his supporter connections

Since entering onto stage politically unexpectedly early days-Trump consistently defied predictions against odds faced especially approaching final weeks past midterms betting again he can navigate through murky waters relying largely upon close ties established amongst loyal followers!

Crowd energy surged recently brought forth high-profile rallies undertaken throughout deeply conservative regions invigorating party supporters alike held events incluing recent gathering Saturday Vandalia Ohio excitement visible reverberated whenever classic lines flared profanity ensued-with packed audience filling high school gymnasium yet portions began trickling out halfway mark spanning ninety minutes long appearances made.”

Pushing towards conclusion speech given Monday Grand Island Nebraska-President resurrected call urging devoted fans remain steadfast treating him like running mate once again stating,”In true way -I am running.” adding further encouraging sentiments pushing everyone keep momentum alive forward!”

Beaumont reported from Des Moines, Iowa Associated Press writers Seung Min Kim contributed reporting Vandalia Ohio along Mary Clare Jalonick Washington correspondent bringing updates provided herein.
