Next month, Oshawa will shine a spotlight on art as the city calls for artists and writers to submit their proposals for two upcoming projects set for next year.
The city is reaching out to Indigenous writers, inviting them to share Expressions of Interest for a public art project focused on Indigenous language and culture at Ed Broadbent Waterfront Park. Writers can apply to Stage 1 by filling out an online application form and providing the necessary documents at oshawa. ca/Artist Calls.
This two-stage process is open to Indigenous creative writers, poets, artists, Knowledge Holders, or storytellers associated with or hailing from the Williams Treaties First Nations. These include the Mississaugas of Scugog Island, Hiawatha, Curve Lake, Alderville First Nations, along with the Chippewas of Georgina Island, Rama and Beausoleil First Nations.
The chosen writer will create text-based artwork intended for installation in the park. This piece will honor human rights advocacy and recognize both Indigenous peoples’ rights and Ed Broadbent himself-a long-time leader of the federal NDP from Oshawa who served as president of the International Centre for Human Rights in 1988.
An independent Public Art Jury made up of Indigenous community members from the seven Williams First Nation signatories will evaluate applications and create a shortlist of candidates for Stage 2.
Writers selected for this shortlist will receive a $750 fee for participating in Stage 2. The final selected writer will be compensated $12,000.
The deadline for applications is Thursday, November 5.
The City of Oshawa is also calling upon local organizations, collectives, and post-secondary programs within creative and cultural sectors or Indigenous organizations to propose temporary exhibitions at Art & Culture in the Hall outside City Hall’s council chambers.
Proposals are welcome that may include but aren’t limited to art exhibitions, heritage displays, cultural showcases or community storytelling events.
Up to four proposals will be chosen to feature at Art & Culture in the Hall-a rotating exhibition program celebrating local talent, history and cultural groups-on display from February 2027 through August 2027.
This call invites organizations and collectives along with post-secondary programs; artist applications specifically for Art & Culture in the Hall will occur early in 2027.
Submissions must be received by noon on Friday, November 13.
A selection committee comprising members from the city’s Cultural Leadership Council and Public Art Task Force-as well as city staff-will review all submissions received.
