Belgium eliminated the United States from their own World Cup on Monday, with Charles De Ketelaere scoring two goals in a 4-1 victory that was overshadowed by the heated debate over Folarin Balogun’s suspension.
This win allows Belgium to move on to face Spain in the quarter-finals, while the US joins co-hosts Canada and Mexico in exiting the tournament after a lackluster showing in the round of 16.
Before the game, all eyes were on Balogun and whether he would start for the US. This came after US President Donald Trump urged FIFA to reconsider Balogun’s one-game ban due to a red card, and controversially, FIFA complied.
Belgium also had its own surprises in their lineup, resting key players like Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku. Coach Rudi Garcia’s strategy paid off when De Ketelaere scored early, deflating the crowd’s excitement in Seattle.
Malik Tillman managed to pull one back with a free kick, but De Ketelaere quickly restored Belgium’s lead. A blunder by Matt Freese and a late goal from Romelu Lukaku sealed the fate of the Americans.
The decision by FIFA to lift Balogun’s suspension after his red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina drew heavy criticism from fans, pundits, and players globally; however, there were no such complaints among those at Seattle’s stadium.
A massive cheer erupted when Balogun’s name was announced as part of the starting XI-his welcome far surpassing even that for American star Christian Pulisic.
The “USA” chant echoed throughout the stadium, completely drowning out a small section of Belgian supporters during those initial moments.
However, that joy was short-lived. In just nine minutes, De Ketelaere found himself scoring easily after Nicolas Raskin’s cross slipped through some weak defending.
This marked the first time during this World Cup that America conceded first. With energy fading from both fans and players alike, any fightback seemed absent on the pitch. The midfield struggled while defense appeared shaky.
<p As half an hour passed, Balogun earned a foul near the edge of Belgium’s area which reignited hope among supporters. He animatedly gestured as Malik Tillman set up for what could be another chance following his earlier success against Bosnia.
