(CNN) – Earlier this year, President Donald Trump called the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool “absolutely filthy,” promising to spruce up the landmark and make it “look gorgeous, beautiful” so it would once again reflect the federal monuments around it.
The $14 million renovation became a personal project for the president, symbolizing his commitment to enhancing Washington, DC, with architectural improvements that also included creating a White House ballroom and fixing rundown fountains in the capital ahead of America 250 celebrations.
However, as July 4 approaches, the pool located near Abraham Lincoln’s statue has instead highlighted the significant divisions surrounding these beautification efforts – and Trump’s presidency itself – as ongoing algae issues and peeling blue material from the newly painted bottom of the pool have delayed progress on the renovation project.
On Friday, Trump echoed claims circulating in right-wing circles that vandalism was responsible for the pool’s problems. He connected it to an incident where “8647” was etched into the grass on the National Mall days earlier, mentioning that law enforcement is looking into it.
“We’ve had some real problems with Vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool,” Trump posted on Truth Social without providing any evidence. “The algae is 75% gone, and the condition will soon be completely remedied, and the area that was vandalized, fortunately, is just a small area of damage and will be fixed early next week.”
In recent days, both tourists and locals have flocked to see this site, capturing videos of its murky green water for social media posts either criticizing Trump’s presidency or passionately defending efforts to clean up DC. Some even took strips of blue material as souvenirs. Others recorded federal workers pouring hydrogen peroxide into the water.
On Saturday morning, visitors stopped by while jogging or biking or as part of their overall visit to Washington. Many took photos and videos focusing on the algae while others voiced their frustrations about how things looked as they walked by. On top of some algae at the bottom were various markings including a smiley face. Meanwhile, federal employees worked hard vacuuming up algae with large hoses.
“You can’t make this up: after railing about waste, fraud, and abuse, the Trump Administration spent $14 million on a reflecting pool reno that’s now peeling and chock full of algae,” Democratic Sen. Jeff Merkley from Oregon wrote in a post on X. “I’m pressing to get answers for this embarrassing waste of resources.”
The Interior Department has brushed off visible signs of algae which have only increased due to DC’s warm and humid weather promoting its growth.
In a post on X Wednesday, their press office highlighted efforts made to clear out algae while describing how clear they believed their water was.
CNN has reached out to the Interior Department for comments and more details regarding cleanup efforts.
For now what should have been a simple task returning this century-old pool back to its former glory has turned into quite a spectacle attracting tourists curious about why things look so bad.
Trump aimed to finish renovations that had stumped previous presidents starting in late March. In another Truth Social post he criticized Biden’s administration for not tackling this issue after Obama’s $34 million reconstruction effort fell short.
As weeks passed by Trump expanded what would be done during renovations ordering cosmetic changes including painting parts of its bottom blue similar to that found in American flags. This color change quickly led to lawsuits from nonprofit groups arguing against violations related to required consultation processes involving public notice along with input from other agencies before any work could begin legally under federal laws governing such projects.
The president also insisted completion should happen before July 4th despite admitting later on how expedited timelines resulted in total costs ballooning nearly seven times higher than initial estimates set at just $1.8 million originally proposed budget wise across all necessary expenditures made thus far toward accomplishing goals outlined previously!
A visit followed suit whereby he came down personally checking progress observed recently; weeks prior he began celebrating prematurely posting AI-generated images depicting himself alongside cabinet members smiling blissfully floating within said reflection pool (which remained unfinished!).
Barely one day after filling it up with fresh water though there appeared noticeable amounts already surfacing along edges indicating further complications ahead if not addressed promptly!
