Toronto police report that a 58-year-old man has been charged following an investigation into a suspected hate-motivated assault. He allegedly shouted anti-Israeli slurs and made death threats at a person while throwing rocks.

According to a statement from the Toronto Police Service on Tuesday evening, the incident took place earlier that day around 12:10 p. m. near Jane Street and Lawrence Avenue West. Officers claim the suspect confronted the victim without any provocation.

“The accused yelled anti-Israeli slurs and then picked up rocks and other items from the street and repeatedly threw them at the victim while uttering death threats,” investigators said.

“It is believed that the victim was targeted because of their religious attire.”

Police indicated that the victim sustained minor physical injuries as a result of the incident.

Authorities reported that Abdulkadir Al-Jelani was later arrested and charged with three counts of assault with a weapon and one count of uttering death threats.

The accused is scheduled to appear in a Toronto court on Wednesday morning. The allegations remain unproven in court.

Investigators mentioned they are treating this incident as a suspected hate-motivated offence, which may lead them to consult with the Crown attorney’s office. Typically, if someone is charged and found guilty, officers noted that hate could be considered an aggravating factor during sentencing.
