TORONTO (AP) – Jesús Sánchez launched his first career grand slam, while Ernie Clement and Yohendrick Piñango added solo homers, leading the Toronto Blue Jays to an 8-1 victory over the Miami Marlins on Tuesday night. This win ended the Marlins’ four-game winning streak.
All three home runs came off Marlins pitcher Sandy Alcantara, who is now winless in his last six starts.
Sánchez cleared the bases during a six-run sixth inning for Toronto with a 394-foot shot to right field. It was his sixth home run of the season.
Sánchez played for parts of six seasons with the Marlins before being traded to Houston at last season’s trade deadline. He joined Toronto in February.
Clement started the scoring in the second inning with a homer, marking his fifth of the season and his second in consecutive games. Piñango extended the lead to 3-1 with a leadoff homer in the sixth.
Kazuma Okamoto and George Springer each contributed RBI singles for the Blue Jays, who have a record of 7-10 against National League teams. Springer went 3 for 4 and was also hit by a pitch during the game.
Alcantara (3-4) allowed a season-high eight runs and matched his worst outing of allowing ten hits over 5 2/3 innings. He hit four batters throughout the game and left to boos after hitting Okamoto on the arm following Sánchez’s grand slam.
In four career starts against Toronto, Alcantara has struggled, going 0-3 with a 6.07 ERA while giving up 34 hits across 26 2/3 innings pitched.
After Braydon Fisher delivered a scoreless first inning for Toronto, rookie right-hander Spencer Miles (2-0) stepped up next, giving up just one run on three hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. took batting practice before this game but sat out again due to an injury; he left Sunday’s game against Pittsburgh after being hit on his right elbow by a pitch.
The Blue Jays’ RHP Kevin Gausman (4-3, 3.23 ERA) is set to face off against Marlins RHP Eury Pérez (3-6, 4.91) in Wednesday’s series finale.
