Ontario’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has announced it is looking into the death of a man found in a cell at the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) Orillia Detachment on Monday morning.
In a press release issued on Monday, the SIU reported that a 44-year-old man was discovered deceased in the cell.
As stated in the news release, the man was taken into custody Sunday evening along with two others due to a “reported disturbance.”
The men were brought to the Orillia OPP Detachment, searched, and placed in cells, according to the SIU.
During a routine check on Monday morning, staff found that one of the men showed no signs of life. Efforts to revive him began immediately and continued when paramedics arrived until he was later pronounced dead, as detailed in the release.
The SIU mentioned that three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to look into this case.
