Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting found the net in the 98th minute, helping the New York Red Bulls earn a point with a 1-1 draw against Toronto FC on Saturday during Toronto’s home opener.
Toronto (2-1-1) got on the scoreboard first in the 43rd minute when Dániel Sallói scored from the middle of the box after receiving a pass from Djordje Mihailovic. Goalkeeper Luka Gavran made crucial saves to maintain their lead before halftime, blocking several early attempts from the Red Bulls.
New York (2-1-1) dominated much of the game, holding 63.3% possession and finishing with an 18-12 advantage in shots and an 11-5 lead in corner kicks. Gavran kept Toronto ahead throughout the second half with multiple stops as the Red Bulls pushed for an equalizer.
In stoppage time, Toronto almost extended their lead, but Ethan Horvath denied Sallói to keep New York within striking distance.
Shortly after, the Red Bulls broke through. Choupo-Moting scored in the eighth minute of added time to secure a draw and stretch New York’s unbeaten run against Toronto to 14 matches (9 wins, 5 draws) dating back to 2019.
