TILLSONBURG – The Battle of the Badges is making its return to Tillsonburg Memorial Arena!

This Saturday, the Oxford OPP will take on Tillsonburg firefighters in their annual charity hockey tournament.

Community Safety and Media Relations Constable Randi Crawford came up with the idea for this event three years ago during a call with Sarah Barclay, Public Educator for Tillsonburg Fire & Rescue Services.

“We were talking about how we wish we could get together more often in positive settings and not just during serious calls. We thought about hosting some kind of competition, and then settled on hockey since almost everyone loves it!”

They agreed to support charities that represent both the community and first responders. In its inaugural year, funds were raised for Ronald Mc Donald House Charities, followed by Make-A-Wish Foundation last year. This year, Constable Crawford says they will be supporting Parkwood Institute rehabilitation program through St. Joseph’s Healthcare London.

“Almost all of us know someone who has experienced a tragic accident and ended up at a hospital in London, usually going to Parkwood for rehab. As first responders ourselves, that’s where we end up if we need any kind of rehab too.”

The puck drops at 3:00 p. m. this Saturday, but there will also be a family free skate starting at 2:00 p. m. Admission is by donation, but it’s suggested that everyone contribute $5 or more.

Tickets can be purchased at the door or you can email Crawford at randi. crawford@opp. ca to get them ahead of time.

Randi Crawford called into Heart FM studio to chat with Dan and Marcie on Monday April 20th. You can listen to their full interview below:
