Tillsonburg voters will have two current council members to choose from in this fall’s mayoral election.
Councillor Kelly Spencer has declared her intention to lead the town’s council by entering October’s municipal election. Mayor Deb Gilvesy has already announced her plans for re-election.
“I am running because I believe Tillsonburg deserves leadership that is visible, accessible, collaborative, and focused on moving our community forward,” Spencer said.
“Our town has incredible strengths, dedicated residents, passionate volunteers, and tremendous potential. To fully realize that potential, we need leadership that brings people together, builds relationships, and works toward common goals.”
Spencer expressed concerns that the council has been “distracted” by “too much discord” which reflects poorly on the town.
“To make Tillsonburg fire on all cylinders, we all need to be in sync,” she said. “When we are aligned and working collaboratively, Tillsonburg can achieve great things. I will foster respectful dialogue and effective leadership for our community at every level of government.”
A former nurse and current owner of Indigo Lounge, a local restaurant and healing center that offers a variety of health-related classes, Spencer has been serving as a town councillor since 2022.
During this time, she has regularly shared updates and opinions on her social media pages.
“It has been important to me to keep our community informed,” she said. “I am proud of what we have accomplished together, and I see even greater opportunities ahead.”
Spencer envisions a “thriving downtown, strong local businesses, housing options for every stage of life, support for seniors aging in place, continued healthcare advocacy, and a community where everyone feels safe, connected, and proud to call Tillsonburg home.”
“I have spent my life serving others,” she added. “I am ready to bring that experience, education, energy, and commitment to the role of mayor.”
As of June 12, Spencer and Gilvesy were the only two candidates on the mayoral ballot.
Incumbents David Beres – the deputy mayor – and Chrissy Rosehart have also filed to run for council alongside Lindsey Ambrus Mejaski, Ron Gasparetto, and Deanna (Dee) Tosto. Only one name listed for school board positions is Mary Holmes (London District Catholic).
The deadline to file or withdraw nominations is August 21. Advanced voting takes place from October 13 to 25 with election day scheduled for Oct. 26.
