Tillsonburg council has approved two amendments regarding 83 Rolph St. as this historic building is being renovated into a condominium complex.

Town councillors voted in favor of adjustments that will straighten out the front three dormers so they align with the back of the building and change the design of the north entrance door to fit its heritage look.

Andrew Teeple, co-owner of Athon Construction-the company handling renovations on this century-old structure-mentioned that these changes will help preserve its historical appearance.

“It’s to bring 83 Rolph St. back to life while respecting its character, the history and the significance for this community,” he said. “We’re doing everything we can to make it happen.”

While these changes might seem small, any proposed modifications to a heritage property’s exterior must be reviewed by Tillsonburg’s heritage committee and town council due to its designated status.

Teeple pointed out that these adjustments will actually bring back elements closer to how it originally looked compared with recent years.

The three dormers-a roofed structure containing windows extending beyond a pitched roof-are among one of two major changes planned. Teeple indicated they would be modified so they align with five vertical rounded dormers nearby.

The new windows will follow heritage styling too, while keeping intact original roofline silhouette, Teeple noted. His presentation highlighted that these alterations would make operation easier for residents while also improving energy efficiency and reducing leaks compared with skylights.

Teeple had previously met with both planning and heritage committees from town who backed his proposals before final approval came from council.

“All of those benefits -the tangible and intangibles- vastly outweighs one aspect that happened catch caught in that heritage bylaw,” Teeple said.
