On Wednesday morning, byelections were announced for three voting districts in Ontario, including one in the Hamilton region.

A writ was issued according to Section 9.1 of the Election Act for byelections in the electoral districts of Hamilton East-Stoney Creek, Scarborough Southwest, and York-Simcoe.

The Election Act mandates that elections must be called on a Wednesday and take place on the fifth Thursday following the issuance of the writ.

Election day is set for September 3.

Reasons for the byelections

Hamilton East-Stoney Creek MPP Neil Lumsden officially stepped down on August 4. He also held the position of minister of sport in Premier Doug Ford’s Conservative cabinet.

Caroline Mulroney, MPP for York-Simcoe and a member of the provincial Conservative Party, has resigned as well.

Additionally, Doly Begum, NDP MPP for Scarborough Southwest, left Queen’s Park after securing a federal seat.

The candidates

Monique Taylor, a former Hamilton MPP, declared on July 29 that she would run again for the provincial NDP in Hamilton East-Stoney Creek.

Jeff Beatie from the Progressive Conservatives, Pascale Marchand representing the Greens, and Liberal candidate Heino Doessing have also joined the race for Hamilton East-Stoney Creek.

The Scarborough Southwest district is expected to be particularly competitive.
