The Tillsonburg Kinsmen Club has successfully gathered essential funds to assist the Helping Hand Food Bank and a Home Comfort Meal Program run by Marcel Rosehart and Chrissy’s Catering.
The Club’s Food For Friends campaign raised over $13,000, which includes a generous $5,000 donation. June 13 marked the last day for contributions.
“I’m thrilled, these guys are terrific,” said Joan Clarkson, the Helping Hand Food Bank co-ordinator. “This whole community has stepped right up and given us so much.”
Due to current COVID-19 restrictions, the food bank had to adjust its food collection methods. Donated food must now be quarantined for a period of time.
This works for some donations; however, major food drives – especially the food bank’s annual fall blitz that gathers thousands of pounds of food – will face challenges this year.
“We don’t know if we’ll be able to get the food drive in this year,” mentioned Brenda Fitzgerald, Helping Hand interim co-ordinator.
“We don’t have the space to quarantine what we typically receive from the fall food drive,” Clarkson pointed out, adding that they’re considering all options.

Shane Curtis, president of the Tillsonburg Kinsmen Club, noted their initial goal was set at $10,000. They reached this amount in under one week.
They donated $7,000 to the Helping Hand Food Bank and $3,000 towards the senior meals program. The $3,000 is expected to cover around 300 meals according to Curtis.
Marcel Rosehart from Chrissy’s Catering offers home comfort meals for $10 each. The Kinsmen wanted part of their Food For Friends funds dedicated specifically for vulnerable seniors.
A small committee within the Kinsmen comprised of Curtis (President), Cedric Tomico, Dave Martin and John Danbrook along with Dave Klosler and Scot Bolton was established.
Curtis mentioned they prefer cash donations at this time.
“We wanted to provide food for those in need but after talking with the food bank, we realized that traditional food drive methods carried too many risks because of contact,” said Curtis.
