The 172nd edition of the Tillsonburg Fair is set to feature Monster Trucks, a talent show, celebrity appearances, the yearly ambassador contest, and of course, a midway with rides, games, and food trucks serving favorites like cotton candy and saltwater taffy.
Taking place from Aug. 14 to 16 at the fairgrounds, this annual event is organized by the Tri-County Agricultural Society.
Gates will open on Friday at 6 p. m., followed by opening ceremonies and the crowning of the ambassadors. The Mini King and Queen contest welcomes kids aged six to nine, while the junior ambassador contest is for ages 10 to 15, and the main ambassador title is available for those between 16 and 23, with the requirement that contestants cannot be married. Every participant receives a gift bag.
The winner of the ambassador competition will have opportunities to represent the fair board at various events, participate in the Santa Claus parade, and compete further leading up to an event at the Canadian National Exhibition.
“It’s a great opportunity to learn about agriculture, get out in the community, represent your community,” said Rosemary Dean, society third vice-president. “It’s good for your self-esteem.”
There’s also a senior ambassador competition for participants aged 70 and above.
Dean mentioned that as of last Friday there were no entries yet for the ambassador competition.
A basketball game featuring Special Olympics athletes versus first responders kicks off at 6:30 p. m., an event Dean noted is always enjoyable.
For tractor pull fans, there’ll be plenty of horsepower at this event starting at 7 p. m.
The Copper Mug’s beer tent will host local performers along with cold drinks. Ian BW, Trevor Kostyria and the Half Smokes are scheduled to play on Friday night starting at 7.
Think your baby has long hair or can shine in different categories during our baby show? Saturday morning kicks off with this favorite event in Lion’s Auditorium. Registrations begin at 9 a. m. until just before it starts at 10 a. m.
Following that will be a pet show aimed at kids starting at 11 a. m., allowing them to showcase their pets’ talents including best trick performances. Those wanting to see livestock can check out the 4-H livestock show happening in the cattle barn also starting at 11 a. m.
An ice cream eating contest sponsored by Shaw’s Ice Cream is set for 2 p. m.
This year features a new monster truck show running from 1 p. m. to 2 p. m. on Saturday.
