THUNDER BAY – Highway 11/17 is closed in both directions between Kakabeka Falls and Shabaqua Road due to a serious crash involving a passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer.

The details on injuries are not available right now. There’s no detour route set up, so drivers are advised to steer clear of the area.

Closure impacts important Trans-Canada Highway route

This closure affects one of the key east-west travel routes for Thunder Bay, Northwestern Ontario, and cross-country commercial traffic.

Highway 11/17 is part of the Trans-Canada Highway system and serves as an essential path for local commuters, freight trucks, emergency services, resource sector vehicles, and regional supply chains. When this highway segment is closed, it limits travel options especially for commercial drivers and travelers heading between Thunder Bay and nearby communities to the west.

Ontario 511 defines a closure as when all travel lanes are blocked, and states that highway incidents and closures can be monitored using its interactive map and traveler information tools.

Drivers urged to avoid the area

Motorists traveling west of Thunder Bay should postpone their trips if they can and stay updated with official news before setting out. Those already on the road should follow police instructions and traffic controls while preparing for long delays.

No estimated timeline for reopening has been confirmed yet.

Impact on the region

This latest closure again shows how fragile Northwestern Ontario’s highway network is. With limited alternative routes, a serious accident on Highway 11/17 can quickly disrupt passenger travel, freight transport, fuel deliveries, food supply lines, and connections between rural areas and Thunder Bay.

Further updates will be shared as they become available from law enforcement or highway officials.
