A joint investigation by the South Bruce OPP and Saugeen Shores Police Service is currently taking place regarding what authorities have described as a serious motor vehicle accident in downtown Port Elgin on Saturday afternoon.
A black pickup truck remained at the closed intersection of Gustavus Street and Goderich Street (Highway 21) for several hours while police examined the scene – debris from vehicles littered the road, and multiple cars that were parked or traveling on Gustavus Street sustained significant damage.
A witness who was shopping nearby reported seeing a man fleeing from the site of the crash.
While there is no confirmed link, it has come to light that a local taxi driver is recovering from a head injury caused by an individual who attempted to steal her cab just around the corner from where the accident occurred earlier that afternoon.
The neighbor of the victim, who requested anonymity to maintain privacy, mentioned that the injured taxi driver came to their Waterloo Street apartment, bleeding from her head wound, asking for assistance. She recounted being attacked when she returned home; the man ran off after failing to start her vehicle. The woman was subsequently taken to the hospital for care.
In a social media update at 6:30 p. m. about the incident, Saugeen Shores police stated there was an “active investigation between the Saugeen Shores Police and the Ontario Provincial Police. There are no concerns for public safety. No further details will be released at this time.”

At this moment, any connection remains unclear, but shortly after at 7:30 p. m., an OPP West Region social media post announced that police had resumed regular patrols and lifted enhanced police presence south of Port Elgin between Side Road 10 and J & I Side Road on Bruce-Saugeen Townline. A further update at 9:10 p. m. indicated investigators were still conducting their localized onsite examination, with road closures along Bruce-Saugeen Townline still in effect.
Earlier at 4:44 p. m., OPP West Region reported that Bruce-Saugeen Townline was closed in that area due to a heavy police presence and advised drivers to find alternative routes. Authorities reiterated there was no threat to public safety.
